Corporations as conversations

Collaboration and social software have been around for a number of years, but are starting to make a significant appearance in the enterprise. For this reason, I have decided to start writing about it and connect with others who share a passion for adaptive and agile organizations. And after all, how can I recommend that my clients blog, if I don’t blog myself?

We have often heard of “markets as conversations” and we’re finally seeing “corporations as conversations”. And these conversations are going to take place between silos, international offices, subsidiaries, partners, and customers. The result is going to be a transformation in how business is conducted. It’s not going to happen overnight. And it doesn’t herald the end of corporations as we know them. But the experience of large numbers of people coming together to accomplish something will be better. And the value that customers derive will increase.

There will be obstacles and objections - “We don’t have time to ‘have conversations’, we have work to do..” And that’s a valid point. I’m sure someone said the same thing about email at first. But although email has become an essential part of business, its decreasing “signal to noise ratio” has made it a great source of distraction and inefficiency.

The challenge is to bring clarity to all this information, to all these conversations, through meaningful and contextual communication between everyone in the enterprise. The benefits to those who succeed are a better sense-and-respond organization.
